Making Change With Cognitive Analytical Therapy

An experienced psychiatrist offering structured, time-limited therapy to help you understand and change unhelpful relationship, emotional and behavioural patterns — in person and online.

Ever found yourself stuck – repeating the same patterns of behaviour or finding yourself having the same difficult experiences again and again?

Maybe it is time to reflect, rethink and work towards something different. Let Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) help you.

I cover the whole of the UK with online consultations, or the Suffolk area for face to face.

What is Cognitive Analytic Therapy?

Cognitive Analytic Therapy or CAT is a type of taking therapy, where you work with your therapist to help understand how your past experiences impact your current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It helps to understand how we relate to ourselves and others and through collaborative, structured sessions, helps identify any unhelpful patterns that might keep us stuck and find ways to do things differently.

It is considered an ‘integrated’ approach taking influence from both behavioural and analytic branches of psychology.

An individual CAT session is priced at £100, but the initial consultation is free, with no obligation.

How does CAT work?

CAT considers that therapy, when you are trying to make change, works best when there is a start, middle and end to the journey.
CAT asks us to consider how we developed emotionally as we were growing up. What strategies did we learn then to get our needs met? Are we still using the same strategies now even though they may no longer be serving us.
The first part of CAT therapy involves working with your therapist to understand your difficulties; in particular how they have developed and what impact they have. At this point, your therapist  will write you a letter detailing their understanding of your challenges, ensuring you are both in agreement.
Understanding what your do and who you di makes that you have choices. Going forward  in therapy, together you will work towards recognising when you repeat unhelpful patterns and considering new ways of being.
During your time together, you and your therapist will work together to create a diagram or ‘map’ – giving a visual representation of the patterns you are working on, helping you recognise when you are in them.
In CAT this is generally structured over 16 to 24 sessions.
However, for some people, fewer sessions are needed to make sense of things.
We can decide this together and you can change your mind at any time.
I work mostly remotely but face to face sessions are available.
